bless-god-america“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people He has chosen as His own inheritance.”  (Psalm 33:12)

This title is usually the other way around, but in such a critical time as this, America need to bless God. We bless God by living as true witnesses to our Christian faith to glorify God on earth. In dependence upon God, the American Founding Fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honour. The fifty-six men who signed the Declaration of Independence put their lives on the line, ‘nine died of wounds and hardship during the war. Five were captured and imprisoned, and in each case subjected to torture.’ According to Benjamin Franklin at the  American Constitutional Convention in July 1797, ‘all of us who were engaged in the struggle must have observed frequent instances of a superintending Providence in our favor….’

In the beginning, America found a good friend in Jesus, in their pains, griefs, trials and temptations. When America was ‘weak and heavy-laden. Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Saviour …,’ was their refuge and Friend. The question asked by Franklin 219 years ago continue to resonate and calls for a sincere and humble reflection by all my American friends and other nations founded upon Christian heritage. Franklin asked his fellow Americans, have we now forgotten this powerful Friend?  Or do we imagine we no longer need His assistance? According to Franklin, the Truth is ‘that God governs in the affairs of man.’ To Franklin and based on his believe ‘in the Sacred Writings,’  without God ‘and His concurring aid, we (American) shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel; we shall be divided by our little partial local interest; our projects will be confounded; and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a byword down to future ages.  And what is worse, mankind may hereafter, from this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing government by human wisdom and leave it to chance, war or conquest.’ For those who don’t believe in prophecy, they should be able to see how Franklin prophecy has been fulfilled over the years. God who did it in the time of Franklin is the same today and for ever He will be.

The 4th of July for America is more than a birthday but a ‘reminder of what/Whom it was established.’ God indeed blessed America, it is time for Americans to arise and bless God by living as true witness to their true Refuge and Friend, whose arms took, prospered and shielded them. America, arise and bless God. To whom much is given, much is expected.
