Our culture encourages pluralism and relativism, suggesting that all ideas are equal and that morality is difficult to define. This results in worldviews that deny the existence or knowability of truth. Such thinking is inconsistent and self-defeating, because to state ‘there is no truth’ is to make a truth claim and deny reality. The debate about Jesus’ famous seven “I am” statements in John may seem foolish to those who do not believe, like denying that water is wet or refusing to clarify what it means to be male or female (Jn 14:6; Gen 1:26-28).

Jesus’ sixth “I AM” statement uses two Greek words, “ego eimi,” referencing God’s covenant name revealed to Moses at the burning bush: “I AM WHO I AM” or YAHWEH. Jesus’ description of Himself as “the way, the truth, and the life” shows His character, mission, and work—bringing people to heaven. In declaring Himself “the way, the truth, and the life,” Jesus identifies Himself as the exclusive path to God the Father, the embodiment of divine truth, and the sole source of eternal spiritual life (Jn 14:6). This message means that paths and roads are metaphors for the choices, principles, and relationships that shape our lives.

In the Gospel, Thomas voiced the confusion of every disciple: “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Exclusively and with clarity, Jesus answered, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (v. 6). In a time when Jesus’ words are increasingly controversial, He is not one of many ways. He is the only way to God the Father (Acts 4:12). Only God’s perfect Son could pay the full price for our offences against Him and open the way to a renewed relationship. Jesus, as “the Way, the truth, and the life,” shows that salvation comes solely through a relationship with Him, not through rituals or easy believism—the belief that we are free to live however we want.

In the church’s early days, Christianity was called “the Way” (Acts 9:2; 19:9, 23; 24:14, 22). The early church saw Jesus as the ONLY way out of spiritual darkness, being lost, slavery to sin, guilt, and condemnation (1Pet 2:9; Lk 19:10; Rom 6:6; Heb. 10:22; Rom 8:1). Jesus Christ, the “I Am,” and His exclusive way to God identifies Him as divine and set Him apart from other religious leaders who only claimed to know or teach the truth, rather than being it.

To find our highest purpose and fulfilment in life, and to receive eternal life, we look to Jesus. As the Way, he guides us to the Path, the Bridge, the Mediator, and the Guide. As the Truth, he leads us to reality, the Word, the Revelation, and the ultimate Truth. As the Life, he connects us to the Source, Eternal Life, spiritual substance, and Resurrection.

Jesus Christ, the “I AM”, is saying to the church and its leadership in our present distress and decline that faith in Jesus Christ alone is necessary for salvation (Acts 9:2). Jesus is the only bridge or path to God the Father, reconciling humanity to God. Jesus is the “road” to salvation. Jesus does not just teach truth; He is the perfect embodiment of God’s truth, providing a trustworthy guide in a world of deception. Jesus is the source of both spiritual life now and eternal life. For the church to experience a reawakening, Jesus demands the churches and leadership’s exclusive trust in Him. Join me to prayerfully sing the inspiriing hymn by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend :

In Christ alone, my hope is found
He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand

In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
‘Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live,

There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious Day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the power of Christ in me
From life’s first cry to final breath
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand –
